We have lots of learning going on this month.
Reading: Making connections with historical events and steps in technical procedures. We also will be learning how to describe reasons an author writes information.
Math: We are continuing to work on word problems in all the different ways ( one and two step, start and middle unknown). We are going to be learning about measurement tools and how to make rulers using centimeters and inches.
Social Studies: We are learning about James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, Tomochichi and Sequoyah and their importance in Georgia's history.
Science: We will be learning about stars.
Writing: We are working on writing informational papers about topics that we are experts "know alot about" on.
Also , don't forget to keep track of your child's reading each day on the Reading Log sent home last week. It is due to Ms.Culbertson on Dec 2 for a chance to earn pawbucks. See below for more information:
"Dear Parent,
Each child at Powers Ferry will receive a paper copy of this reading log on Friday, November 1. English: https://tinyurl.com/y365d2yn
Spanish: https://tinyurl.com/y6x839ha
This begins our November reading challenge where we will pay students in PAW bucks for minutes that they have read outside of school for the whole month. They will use the reading log each day to record reading minutes read outside of school. Any reading counts. It can be books, ebooks, magazines, cereal boxes, or having a parent/adult read with him/her, etc. Time spent reading in after school programs counts, as well.
A PAW Buck will be awarded for every 20 min. of reading that is recorded in November and your child can spend those bucks at the school store in December. Those reading minutes add up to a lot more than bucks! Did you know that students who read 20 minutes per day, five days a week will be exposed to 1.8 million words per year and score at 90 percentile on standardized tests? That is a drastic difference from a student who reads 5 minutes a day who will be exposed to 282,000 words per year and scores in the 50th percentile on standardized tests.
We need your support to encourage your child to keep up with his/her reading and we need you to initial the reading logs. Let’s get them in a good reading routine. The payoff will be great!
Every child can be successful."
